Magnesium
Also called Magnesium sulfate
An essential mineral involved in normal muscle and nerve function, added to your bag and infused slowly.
What it is
Magnesium is an essential dietary mineral: your body cannot make it, so all of it comes from what you eat or what you are given. It participates in hundreds of enzyme reactions, and it is one of the minerals most commonly under-consumed relative to dietary reference intakes.
We give it as magnesium sulfate, diluted and run as a piggyback alongside your main bag rather than pushed in directly. That is a safety measure: magnesium given quickly can drop blood pressure, so the protocol caps the rate at no faster than one gram per ten minutes.
What it is used for
- A mineral the body uses in normal muscle function*
- A mineral the body uses in normal nerve signalling*
- Involved in normal energy metabolism at the cellular level*
- Contributes to the maintenance of normal bone*
- Commonly requested by people who train hard, for repletion after heavy exertion*
How we give it
As an addition to any IV drip, diluted in a small bag and infused over fifteen to twenty minutes alongside your main fluids.
It is already included in The Recovery and in the Myers Cocktail. Adding it to those is not necessary; ask your nurse rather than paying twice.
Good to know
Why do I feel warm and flushed?
That is the expected effect of magnesium going in, and it is harmless. Most people describe warmth spreading through the chest and face partway through the infusion, settling within a few minutes. Your nurse will warn you before it starts so it does not take you by surprise. Tell them if it feels like more than warmth.
Can I have more than one gram?
The standing order allows up to two grams in a session, and your nurse decides based on your screening and how you tolerate the first gram. More is not better here: the rate limit exists because of what fast magnesium does to blood pressure.
