Glutathione
Also called Reduced L-glutathione
A tripeptide the body produces and uses as an antioxidant. Given as the final step of a drip, or as a shot.
What it is
Glutathione is a small protein (three amino acids) that the body manufactures itself and maintains inside its cells, where it functions as an antioxidant and participates in the liver's normal processing pathways.
Taken by mouth it is largely broken down in the gut before it is absorbed, which is why it is given by injection or intravenously rather than as a capsule.
It is always the last thing given in a session. That is a protocol requirement, not a preference: it is not run at the same time as vitamin C in the same line, so it waits until the main infusion is complete and then goes in as a slow push over three to five minutes.
What it is used for
- A compound the body uses as an antioxidant, contributing to protection of cells from oxidative stress*
- Participates in the liver's normal metabolic processes*
- Involved in the regeneration of vitamins C and E within cells*
- Frequently requested as part of a skin-focused visit*
How we give it
As a slow IV push at the end of a drip, once the main infusion has finished: 200 to 600 mg depending on what is ordered.
As an intramuscular shot, either on its own or added to a drip visit.
Already included in The Recovery and in The Glow.
Good to know
Why is it always last?
Two reasons. It should not share a line with vitamin C while that is running, and giving it as the closing step means your nurse is watching you during the push and for the observation period straight after; which is when anything unexpected would show.
Will it lighten my skin?
We do not make that claim. Glutathione is widely marketed for skin brightening, and the evidence behind those marketing claims is not strong enough for us to promise you a cosmetic result. What we will say is what it is: an antioxidant the body already makes and uses.
