IV fluids
Extra Liter of Fluid
A second 1 L bag of the same fluid as your drip, added to any IV visit.
What it is
Every drip is built on a sterile base fluid: normal saline, lactated Ringer's, or Plasma-Lyte A on request. Each has its own page. An extra liter is a second bag of the same fluid, run after the first.
Where fluid you drink depends on how fast your gut can absorb it, intravenous fluid enters the circulation directly.
A second bag also makes room. Each bag holds two additives at most, so an extra liter is how a visit fits more vitamins or minerals that can only go in the bag.
What it is used for
- Rehydration with a sterile balanced electrolyte solution
- Commonly requested after heavy exertion, heat exposure, travel, or a period of poor oral intake
- Lactated Ringer's is the preferred base for athletic recovery formulations
How we give it
Added to your visit and infused after or alongside your package; a litre runs over roughly sixty to ninety minutes, adjusted to how you tolerate it.
Good to know
Is more fluid always better?
No. Fluid overload is a real complication, and it is the reason heart and kidney history are absolute screening questions rather than paperwork. If you develop shortness of breath during any infusion, your nurse stops it; and will not restart it.
How much is a litre?
About the same as four large glasses of water, delivered over an hour or so. For most healthy adults that is unremarkable; it is exactly the volume that is not unremarkable in someone with a heart or kidney condition.
Also in IV fluids
Normal Saline
Sterile salt water at about the same concentration as your blood. The base of most of our drips.
Lactated Ringer's
A balanced IV fluid with sodium, potassium, calcium and lactate, closer to the electrolyte mix of blood than plain saline.
Plasma-Lyte A
A balanced IV fluid with sodium, potassium and magnesium at the pH of blood. Any drip can run on it, on request, for a flat $20 more.
