Extra Fluids
Also called Normal saline or lactated Ringer's
An additional litre of sterile balanced fluid, infused alongside your package.
What it is
The base of every drip is a sterile salt solution matched to the concentration of your blood: normal saline, or lactated Ringer's where the formulation calls for a closer match to the body's electrolyte profile. Everything else is added to it.
An extra litre simply means more of that base. Where oral fluid depends on how fast your gut can absorb it, intravenous fluid enters the circulation directly.
What it is used for
- Rehydration with a sterile balanced electrolyte solution*
- Commonly requested after heavy exertion, heat exposure, travel, or a period of poor oral intake*
- Lactated Ringer's is the preferred base for athletic recovery formulations*
How we give it
Added to your visit and infused after or alongside your package; a litre runs over roughly sixty to ninety minutes, adjusted to how you tolerate it.
Good to know
Is more fluid always better?
No. Fluid overload is a real complication, and it is the reason heart and kidney history are absolute screening questions rather than paperwork. If you develop shortness of breath during any infusion, your nurse stops it; and will not restart it.
How much is a litre?
About the same as four large glasses of water, delivered over an hour or so. For most healthy adults that is unremarkable; it is exactly the volume that is not unremarkable in someone with a heart or kidney condition.
