Famotidine
Also called Pepcid
A prescription acid-reducing medication, available on your nurse's assessment.
Prescription medication
This is a prescription medication administered by a licensed registered nurse under standing orders authorized by our Medical Director. It is not something you select for yourself; your nurse decides whether it is appropriate after screening you, and will decline it if it is not.
What it is
Famotidine reduces stomach acid production by blocking histamine H2 receptors on the acid-producing cells of the stomach lining. It is a long-established medication with a well-understood profile.
Given here diluted and infused over fifteen to thirty minutes rather than pushed.
What it is used for
- A medication indicated for acid-related stomach symptoms
- Considered by your nurse where stomach symptoms are part of what you are experiencing at the visit
How we give it
As 20 mg diluted in a small bag and infused over fifteen to thirty minutes.
Your nurse decides whether it is appropriate after screening you.
Good to know
Is this the same as what I buy at the pharmacy?
The same medicine, given a different way. The practical difference is the route and the fact that a nurse has screened you first. Persistent heartburn is worth investigating with your own physician rather than managing visit by visit.
